Learn Chinese 2

10 Reasons To Learn Chinese by David Wilson
Why Should I Learn Chinese
1. Chinese, one of the Sino-Tibetan languages of which Mandarin is one. It is the most widely spoken language on the planet. To put this in perspective there are approximately 915 million speakers of Mandarin (without including any of the other dialects such as Cantonese). Compare this to English, which is the third most spoken language in the world – it has around 350 million speakers.
2. You don’t have to learn Chinese characters to learn to Speak Chinese. Pinyin is a method of writing Chinese in the roman alphabet. Hanyu pinyin spells the sound, and includes tone marks to help give the correct pronunciation.
3. Chinese literature. Although the dialects are not interchangeable the written language is shared between them all. Although you do not need to learn to read Chinese characters to speak the language, by doing so you open the door to an enormously diverse and rich literature. Some of the earliest recorded books were written in forms of Chinese.
4. As we all know now, the Chinese economy is the fastest growing economy in the world.. In todays global marketplace it is a tangible benefit to learn Chinese, if your company invests in China or is considering doing so.
5. Language and culture are linked and learning some of The Chinese Language will help give an appreciation of the cultural heritage of China.
6. As China opens her borders for business with the West, it has never been easier for foreign visitors to travel the country, but to make the most of this opportunity for travel, it is vital to learn Chinese since very few people outside of major cities speak English. Mandarin is spoken throughout China.
7. China has now been firmly established as one of the worlds superpowers and with her huge population will undoubtedly be one of the worlds greatest economic powers in the near future.
8. Food. Of course, you can eat in tourist restaurants and in hotels but for a genuine experience you need to try local restaurants for a culturally different and sensory eating experience.
9. China will host this years Olympic Games. In 2008 many foreign visitors will descend on China to watch the Olympics. It is an ideal opportunity, if you are lucky enough to be going, to stand out from the crowd by being one of the few who has learnt Chinese.
10. It is possible to learn a few words and phrases in Mandarin, enough to be polite without spending years studying Chinese in depth.
If you would like to learn Chinese and expand your horizons, probably the best course available at this time is Rocket Chinese. You can check it out further at http://rocketchinese.cbreviews.info.

Chinese Five Spice Powder 1 lb: K $13.77 This is Frontier’’s nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Chinese 5 spice is a blend of dry spices that originated in China. It contains the following spices, Cinnamon, fennel, cloves, star anise and white pepper. It is often used in the classic dish Peking Duck as a marinade. Chinese 5 spice is very pungent and has a strong flavor, so use it sparingly. It can also be added to sauces or sprinkled over deep fried wantons. http://www.pepperfool.com/recipes/appetizers/chinese_5spicewings.html: Chinese 5-spice Chicken Wings 3 pounds chicken wings (12 to 14) 1 onion a 1 1/2-inch piece peeled fresh gingerroot 2 tablespoons soy sauce (preferably Kikkoman) 1 tablespoon medium-dry Sherry 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne or Thai Chile powder 1 tablespoon sugar 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon coarse salt 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper, or to taste 1/2 cup cornstarch 6 cups vegetable oil Cut off wing tips, reserving for another use, and halve wings at joint. Coarsely chop onion and finely chop gingerroot. In a large sealable plastic bag combine onion, gingerroot, soy sauce, Sherry, five-spice powder, sugar, and 1 teaspoon salt. Add wings and seal bag, pressing out excess air. Turn bag until wings are completely coated. Marinate chicken wings in bag in a large bowl, chilled, turning bag once, 2 hours. Preheat oven to 350°F. Transfer wings and marinade to a roasting pan or large shallow baking pan and bake, covered with foil, in middle of oven 1 hour. Cool wings until they can be handled and drain in a colander, discarding marinade. Wings may be prepared up to this point 1 day ahead and chilled, covered. Reduce temperature to 250°F. In a small serving bowl combine remaining 2 tablespoons salt and pepper. Put cornstarch in a small bowl and dredge each wing, knocking off excess cornstarch and transferring to a shallow pan. In a 5- to 6-quart heavy kettle heat oil until a deep-fat thermometer registers 370°F. Working in batches of 6 or 7, fry wings in oil until golden brown, about 3 minutes, and with a slotted spoon transfer to paper towels to drain. Keep wings warm on a baking sheet in oven. Fry remaining wings in same manner, returning oil to 370°F. between batches. Serve wings with salt and pepper mixture. Serves 6 as an hors d”oeuvre or 4 as a main course. The two-pronged cooking method used for these wings incorporating both braising and deep-frying is a takeoff on the Chinese technique of steaming, then frying. We think it keeps the meat unbelievably tender while getting the skin supercrispy. Be sure to allow at least 2 hours for the wings to marinate. http://www.mexican.recipes-to-go.com/5_Spice_Tamales.html: 5 Spice Tamales Mexican Recipes need not be unhealthy, and can be included in a healthy diet. Ginseng Root Chinese Shui Chu Extract (Panax ginseng; Ren Shen) 2 fl oz: HH $24.66 Used as a tea, decoction, extract, tincture, food additive and supplement. Chinese Ren Shen, ‘root of heaven,’ Panax ginseng, Asian ginseng, is native to Manchuria and Korea and is cultivated in China, Korea and Japan. The ginseng plant requires 5-7 years to mature from seed. Ginseng has a sweetly aromatic flavour. Its root has long been regarded by the Chinese as a panacea for illness, though it was usually used by them in a prophylactic (preventive) rather than a curative manner. Many Native American tribes used American ginseng, Panax quinquefolia. Medicinal uses ranged from digestive disorders to sexual problems. The Chinese began to use American ginseng after it was imported during the 1700s. The traditional applications in China are somewhat different from those for Panax ginseng (Asian ginseng), American ginseng being considered a better stomachic. The type and ratio of ginsenosides are somewhat different in American and Asian ginseng, but not radically different. Pharmacologically, ginseng is nonspecific in its effects and is capable of a normalizing action irrespective of the pathological situation. Ginseng’s ginsenosides are believed to increase energy, counter the effects of stress, and enhance intellectual and physical performance. Thirteen ginsenosides have been identified in Asian ginseng. Ginsenosides Rgl and Rbl have received the most attention. Other constituents include the panaxans, which help lower blood sugar, and the polysaccharides (complex sugar molecules), which support immune function. Numerous double-blind studies have confirmed Chinese tradition, objectively demonstrating Asian ginseng’s ability to lower blood sugar, reduce fatigue and stress, and support the normal function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the hormonal stress system of the body. Ginseng’s support of the brain’s production of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) appears to improve mental performance, learning, and memory and sensory awareness, exactly as Chinese tradition has always maintained. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs, reflecting the opinion of modern scientific herbalism, recommends Ginseng root (Panax ginseng) ‘As tonic for invigoration and fortification in times of fatigue and debility, for declining capacity for work and concentration, also during convalescence.’ ‘Daily dosage: 1 – 2 g of root; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Cut root for teas, powder and galenical preparations for internal use. Duration of Administration: Generally up to 3 months. A repeated course is feasible.’ ‘Action: In various stress models, e.g., an immobilization test and the coldness test, the resistance of laboratory test animals (rodents) was increased.’ Grieve’s classic ‘A Modern Herbal’: ‘In China, both varieties (Asian Panax ginseng & American Panax quinquefolia) are used particularly for dyspepsia, vomiting and nervous di |

A repeated course is feasible.’ ‘Action: In various stress models, e.g., an immobilization test and the coldness test, the resistance of laboratory test animals (rodents) was increased.’ Grieve’s classic ‘A Modern Herbal’: ‘In China, both varieties (Asian Panax ginseng & American Panax qui |

Ginseng Root, Chinese 40% Total Ginsenosides Powdered Extract (Panax ginseng; Ren Shen) 25 kg (55 lbs): Q $1856.25 Used as a tea, decoction, extract, tincture, food additive and supplement. Ginseng – Korean Extract 2 fl oz: HH $21.06 Used as a tea, decoction, extract, tincture, food additive and supplement.
